Taxi passengers had to go to an extreme length to save their lives on Monday in Joburg. The passengers noticed that their driver was driving under the influence of booze. The passengers were lucky that a metro police car was passing by at a time.
The passengers then let the police officials know that they need assistance with their driver. The Johannesburg metro police Department spokesperson, Wayne Minaar, says the passengers screamed at the officials letting them know about the taxi driver’s state of being. “The passengers screamed at officers who were passing, cautioning that the taxi driver was highly intoxicated and couldn’t even drive straight. The vehicle was swerving.” The JMPD spokesperson said the driver had a reading of 1.74mg/l, the number is over the lawful limit for people that drive for a living.
The man is looking at charges of driving under the influence. The passengers were give alternative transportation. Social media users applauded the passengers for taking initiative in ensuring that they are safe. One tweep says, “Well done to the passengers. We need these kind of intervention to sort out societal ills.” One tweep says, “It’s about time passengers alert officers of these taxi drivers that put their lives in danger. I always wonder why are passengers allowing taxi drivers to skip red robots…”
