Swift response by police led to the arrest of two suspects during a robbery in progress in one of the retail shops in Kroonstad on Saturday, 28 August 2021 at about 09:00.
It is alleged that about five suspects entered the shop, wherein one of them threatened the manager with a firearm then forced him to the safe. An undisclosed amount of money and about 67 cellphones that were on display were taken.
Another armed suspect allegedly kept staff members at a corner of the store whilst money was being stolen from the tills.
The police were alerted and arrived whilst some of the suspects were still inside the shop. Two were arrested and three are still at large. A firearm allegedly used in the robbery and some of the stolen cash was recovered from the suspects.
It is alleged that suspects who fled the scene with some of the stolen cash and cellphones, used a brown Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Prado getaway cars.
A case of business robbery has been registered for further investigation.
The two suspects aged 29 and 31 will appear at Kroonstad Magistrate’s Court on the charge of business robbery.
