Gauteng Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela has commended the concerted efforts of the Provincial Anti-Corruption Investigating Unit (ACIU) following the arrest on Monday 14 October 2019, of a Constable from Florida SAPS for illegally selling application forms to aspirant police trainees.
This comes after police on Thursday 10 October 2019, were alerted to suspected corrupt activities relating to the illegal sale of application forms for prospective trainees wishing to join the South African Police Service. It was reported that the Constable was selling an application form at R3500 each, where the applicant would have to pay R2000 upfront.
The ACIU team operationalised the tip-off and, on the afternoon of 14 October 2019 arrested the 39-year old suspect at a fast-foods restaurant in Roodepoort after he was found in possession of the deposit that had just been paid by a “victim” who was in on the crime prevention operation.
Further investigations by the ACIU have confirmed that three other victims have been scammed by the same police member.
The suspect is expected to appear before the Roodepoort Magistrate Court on Wednesday, 16 October 2019 facing charges of corruption and fraud.
