A police official that was looking at a protest at the Boschfontein Periodical Court in Mpumalanga lost a finger when he attempted to fight off a protester that used a chainsaw to attack the official. The event happened on Monday. Brigadier Leonard Hlathi, the Mpumalanga police spokesperson, says the mob attacked a station commander of Schoemansdal.
The police official was given the role of keeping law and order at the protest. One person then came to the officer with the alleged aim of cutting his belly. “One person from the mob approached the police officer with the chainsaw which was aimed at cutting his belly, but thee officer managed to defend himself by using his hands to avoid being chopped. Unfortunately, in the process, the station commander’s finger was injured,” says the police spokesperson.
Brigadier Leonard Hlathi says the police have also found misleading information making rounds on social media where people state that they have the station commander’s finger on their person. The police spokesperson states that there was another case on Tuesday when police officials were attacked. One public representative was shot during the event, which resulted in death. The case was given to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for more investigation.
