The community in and around Postmasburg are warned not to hitchhike or give strangers lifts as this could endanger their lives.
There have been a few cases reported whereby victims innocently give strangers a lift and then the hitchhikers force them to drive to the bushes where they then forcefully extract cash from them through an EFT or cash send. In other cases the victims were forced at knife point to release their bank cards and pin numbers.
The police are urging motorists not give hikes to strangers or to rest in secluded areas but rather to drive to a nearby garage or a safe areas where there are people.
