PORT ELIZABETH – Excellent teamwork between PE Flying Squad and K9 unit members culminated in the arrest of three suspects in possession of a hijacked Chevy Spark sedan yesterday afternoon in Algoa Park.
It is alleged that on Wednesday 18 November 2020 at about 21:45, a 29-year-old Uber driver picked up three passengers in Sidwell and was transporting them to the North End Lake in Milner Avenue. As they arrived near the stadium, he was threatened at gunpoint and ordered to hand over his cell phone. He was then instructed to get into the back seat however he managed to open the door and run away.
On Sunday afternoon, 22 November 2020 at about 17:00, PE Flying Squad and K9 members followed up on information about the hijacked vehicle allegedly parked at Brown flats in Sidwell. On arrival at the flats, three males were busy on the vehicle. As police stopped behind the vehicle, the suspects started to run. All three suspects were apprehended. The vehicle was impounded for further investigation.
The suspects aged 18, 21 and 26 years old are detained on a charge of possession of suspected hijacked vehicle and vehicle hijacking. They will appear in the New Brighton magistrates’ court tomorrow, 24 November 2020.
Acting Mount Road Cluster Commander, Brig Thandiswe Kupiso commended the efforts of these teams for the excellent arrests and recovery. ‘The flow of information from the communities to our operational men and women on the ground is crucial as such information is immediately followed up and criminals are effectively apprehended,’ added Brig Kupiso.
