PORT ELIZABETH – As the country marks the end of the campaign of 16 days of activism of no violence against women and children, justice was served on a 32-year-old rapist in the Port Elizabeth Regional court today, 10 December 2020.
In February 2018, the accused raped his girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter while the child’s mother was sleeping. He was arrested, appeared in court and was released on R500 bail. In January 2019, both the mother and child failed to attend court and the case was subsequently struck off the roll.
In March 2020, the accused committed the same offence on the child who was now 13-years-old. The Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit in Port Elizabeth arrested the suspect and he remained in custody until the finalisation of both cases.
On 10 December 2020 he was sentenced as follows:
15 years imprisonment for rape
3 years for sexual assault
2 years for exposing or displaying pornography to a child
15 years for rape (March 2020 case)
Both rape cases will run concurrently with each other and the other charges of sexual assault and exposing or displaying pornography to a child will run concurrent. Effectively he will serve 18 years in prison.
