POTCHEFSTROOM – Sicelo Gumede (34) appeared before the Brits Magistrates’ Court today for the alleged murder of his 31-year-old wife, Zanele. He was remanded in custody until his next court appearance on Thursday, 26 November 2020, for a formal bail application.
It is alleged that Zanele’s body was spotted on the side of the Main road (Lonrho Drive) by a passer-by at about 07:00 on Friday, 13 November 2020, in Mooinooi and immediately informed the police. The body was allegedly found with multiple stab wounds while her throat was slit with an unknown object. Emergency Medical and Rescue Services (EMRS) officials were called and declared Zanele dead on the scene.
Whilst still on the scene, Rustenburg police arrived with the suspect who earlier reported his wife as missing. He identified the deceased as his wife. Subsequent to a thorough police investigation, Sicelo was arrested and charged with murder. The motive of the incident is yet to be determined and investigation into the matter continues.
The Provincial Commissioner of North West, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena lauded police for their speedy response that ensured apprehension of the alleged perpetrator within hours after committing the crime. He condemned the incident and further urged members of the community to seek professional help when experiencing domestic related conflicts to avoid tragic incidents such as this one.
