POTCHEFSTROOM – The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena welcomed the life imprisonment term handed down to the 26-year-old Reabaka Alphius Baikepi by the Ganyesa Regional Court on Tuesday,17 November 2020, in connection with the rape of a 76-year-old woman.
Baikepi’s sentencing emanates from his arrest on Saturday, 5 January 2019, for the rape of a 76-year-old granny at Selosesha section, Morokweng. The elderly woman was sleeping alone at her residential place on Monday, 3 April 2017, when the accused broke the window to gain entry. Baikepi covered the granny’s mouth with his hands to prevent her from screaming for help and raped her. Afterwards, he locked the victim’s bedroom, took the key and fled from the scene.
The accused was arrested at his home in Morokweng near Vryburg after the DNA results linked him to the incident and he has been in custody since his arrest.
Lieutenant General Kwena congratulated Morokweng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit (FCS) for working tirelessly in making sure that the accused was convicted. He emphasized that the police take crimes against women and children very serious and that the sentence will serve as a warning to all the criminals out there.
