POLOKWANE – The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has greatly welcomed the multiple life sentences achieved by investigators attached to various units within the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) in the first quarter of 2022/2023 financial year. This after a combined total of one hundred and sixty six (166) years imprisonment were handed down against convicted accused by different courts during the said period around the Province.
The accused, aged between 14 and 67 were sentenced for various crimes committed across the five Districts ranging from rape, murder, robbery, obstruction of justice, sexual assault, theft, attempted rape, common assault and child negligence.
In addition, thirteen (13) life sentences were imposed on 12 accused who were convicted of rape, murder, robbery and obstruction of justice in Vhembe, Capricorn, Sekhukhune and Mopani Districts. Thirty (30) suspects were arrested for rape during this quarter and are currently being processed through the five Regional courts in the Province.
“As we continue the fight against Gender Based Violence and Femicide across the Province, sentences like these will potentially add more impetus to our resolve to finally defeat this scourge,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
“I would there, like to congratulate the men and women in blue for displaying determination and commitment in ensuring that the perpetrators of these horrendous crimes are finally incarcerated and removed from the society,” concluded Lieutenant General Hadebe.
