EASTERN CAPE – The primary function of the Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit is to investigate crimes emanating from gender based violence as well as domestic violence. Arresting perpetrators and securing a sentence is key in any investigation.
On Thursday, 9/07, a 48-year-old man was sentenced for the rape of his 16-year-old relative. On 5 December 2016, the accused invited the teenager to walk with him to a nearby quarry in Malabar to discuss family issues. While at the quarry, he slapped her and raped her.
She reported the incident a week later. The accused ran away and after two years he was traced to King Williams Town. He was arrested by the investigating officer, D/Sgt Nomfundiso Vazi. He appeared in court and was subsequently released on bail.
On 9/07 he was sentenced to 15 years in prison for the rape.
