The ribbon that the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, tied at the Clareinch Post Office last week is missing. Meghan Markle tied the ribbon in respect of Uyinene Mrwetyana. The mother of the murdered University of Cape Town says that this mirror’s the type of society people have become.
Noma, Uyinene Mrwetyana’s mother, says, “The disappearance of the ribbon is quite unfortunate and is actually a reflection of the type of society we have become.” Aaliah Jacobs, a 17-year-old high school student, one of the students who saw Meghan Markle tie the riboon, says people should not treat someone’s respect like that. The 17-year-old says, “I’m highly disappointed that someone took it. You shouldn’t treat someone’s respect like that. But at least Meghan got word out all over the world about Uyinene and gender-based violence.
The Duchess of Sussex showed her backing by standing up against gender-based violence, she also showed that she stands with the people that have been affected by gender based violence on Thursday by tying the ribbon at the post office’s railing. The ribbon also had a message of solidarity, written in Xhosa. The time she tied the ribbon, she was away from the media until the Weekend Argus let her deed be known. She thus also posted the moment on her Instagram. A shop owner told the IOL that she came to his shop at 10am on the day she was killed.
“She asked me if she could draw cash off her card for her parcel because the post office card machines were not working. Unfortunately, the card didn’t allow me to do that. She told me she was going back to the post office at 1pm and I never saw her again,” says the shop owner.
