According to reports, one in every 10 oranges consumed around the globe are now produced by South Africa. The Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy in the agricultural outlook for 2018 to 2029 states that the country’s growing fruit industry has risingly contributed towards a bigger portion of the international trade.
The country’s citrus is the biggest and most significant fruit export in terms of volume and value. The market for citrus fruits has increased by 6 percent last year, resulting in a 10% market share since 2001. According to the Bureau for Food and Agricultural Policy 2028 South Africa could be taking out 25% more cartons of citrus fruits than in 2018. South Africa is the third biggest seller of citrus fruits after Turkey and Spain.
Oranges make up most of the citrus exports in South Africa. 76% of citrus fruits in South Africa are taken out of the country, 10% goes to the United Kingdom and 32% goes to the European Union. According to the Bureau, the production of lemons and limes could increase to 642 000 tons in 2028 and the production of naartjies could rise to 561 000 tons.
