Same-sex Couple Loses Faith In SA Human Rights Court After Being Denied By Wedding Place. The couple, Megan Watling and Sasha-Lee Heekes, were rejected by the place in January.
A same-sex couple that was told that they could not get wedded at a riverside village venue because it didn’t host same-sex weddings due to religious basis has criticised the South African Human Rights Commission’s supposed tardiness in the case. The Human Rights Commission began an application in the equality court against the owners of the venue, Beloftebos wedding venue. The application against the Standford venue was began on Monday, it came after multiple other complaints.
The couple, Megan Watling and Sasha-Lee Heekes, were rejected by the place in January. The couple recalls another couple that was turned back because of being same-sex couple. The couple took supposedly laid a complaint with the South African Human Rights Commission, along with multiple public members and now in 2020 the venue doesn’t want to host their wedding. They then took the issue to the equality court and asked the commission to express reservations in regards to the issue.
The couple says, “Given the misleading information given to us by the SAHRC, their extreme tardiness in this case and after due consideration, we wrote to the South African Human Rights Commission on Thursday thanking them for their efforts in this regard, but withdrawing our complaint and asking them not to seek relief on our behalf. We simply do not trust the SAHRC to act in our best interests.” The found out that the couple had been was going on with the case on Monday. The venue said in a statement that it had not been given court papers yet and they learned about court action through the media.
