SAPS detectives have arrested a female aged 23 for perjury after she allegedly falsely accused her boyfriend of rape.
According to the information, she reported the rape incident to Bell Police Station, where she alleged that her boyfriend had raped her. After the case was opened the police requested her to accompany them to the scene of crime or suspect’s residence where the suspect was arrested and subsequently detained at Alexandria Police Station.
The cellphone belonging to the suspect was seized as part of the investigation. The investigation of the cellphone revealed that the purported victim was in fact not raped and that she allegedly pressed charges against the alleged suspect because there was no payment she allegedly demanded after they slept together.
Police then took the matter to the Public Prosecutor who decided that the female who made false claims to be the victim of rape, be charged with perjury. The alleged rape suspect aged 37 was then released.
Accordingly, the 23-year-old female was arrested by the police and charged for perjury. She is expected to appear in Peddie Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 5 July 2021 on the said charge.
