South African Police Slammed For Demolishing Fake Products. The news made rounds on the internet yesterday.
The national police department demolished fake products that were confiscated from August last year till this year January. The fake products amounted to approximately R500 million. The news made rounds on the internet yesterday.
Social media users did not see what the police did as any good. The users believe that the fake products could have been given to people who need these said products. Some of the social media users specified the people who were affected by the Durban floods in KwaZulu-Natal and those that were affected by cyclone Idai in Mozambique.
One user questioned the police officials’ thinking skills. The user said: “I do not get the logic behind destruction of those goods. Why not distribute them to the needy? Someone’s level of thinking needs to be re-checked.” Another social media user said that the law should acknowledge citizens being given these products, while another user said the products should be given to the less fortunate.
The one user said: “The law should allow government to donate those clothes to its citizens for free.” The latter user said: “Why not give to the poor?” One social media user justified the demolishing of the fake products, the user said that the fake products ruin business for local manufacturers. The user said: “Come and work in the Clothing industry and you [know] how much damage is cause(d) by these counterfeit good(s). Every month a manufacturing is closing because it’s not making any money anymore.”
Other users made jokes about the products. One user made a joke about one of her clothing pieces being in the demolished pack. The social media user said: “my Gucci scarf is probably in there.” Another user also made a joke about one of the fake belts being taken by one of the officers on the site. The user said: “One police man is going home with a Gucci belt today.”
