Mzansi Magic will pay tribute to Mama Mary Twala with a special on-air message when Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung’s brand new cooking show premieres on Friday.
The most-loved award-winning actress, who will be remembered for her roles on several productions, including Sarafina!, Hlala Kwabafileyo and Yizo-Yizo, among many others, passed away over the weekend. She was 80 years old.
“As the Mzansi Magic family, we have conveyed our condolences to one of our own, Somizi, for his loss. We are planning a special tribute for this great, distinguished thespian who kept South Africans entertained and laughing throughout her performances over the years. Despite her legendary presence as a renowned actress, she was accessible enough for the younger crop of creatives to befriended and look up to,” says Nomsa Philiso, the Channel Director for Local Entertainment Channels at M-Net.

Viewers dive into the world of the charismatic Chuene as she opens up about the entertainment industry and its hard truths, her love life and her feisty social media presence. Don’t miss her on-cue impromptu acting with Somizi too.
In this first season of Dinner at Somizi’s, Somizi cooks up a mouth-watering storm and lays out his finest china for family and friends in a unique cooking show that sees culinary deftness meeting hearty and honest conversations, a perfect fly-on-the-wall format that will show off more about the indomitable Somizi and his guests.
Says Philiso: “At this time of Covid-19 and lockdown, when friends and extended families can’t be together and break bread, Somizi brings that ambiance and atmosphere to the screen. We are proud to present programming that resonates with our viewers needs and keeps them entertained. We look forward to seeing how the rest of Somizi’s guestlist looks like.”
The Idols SA judge and radio personality, accompanied by his husband Mohale Motaung-Mhlongo open the doors of their house to the guests and Somizi shares his story about the guests before heading out to the kitchen to introduce the ingredients and the meal he will make.
The show is vintage Somizi, complete with his own language and invented words making for an engaging interaction. From a traditional dish or bake to exotic concoction, Somizi brings his kasi flavour and typical humour as he experiments with his favourite recipes and techniques. The topics on the table vary from light hearted to mature and insightful as the dinner party indulges in what Somizi whips up.
The best part of this unscripted show is the moments in between the cooking, when Somizi and guests talk, play games and make cocktails.
The show closes the cooking and guests section with Somizi making a cocktail that best represents the guests. He recaps the meal and the preparation and concludes by sharing an inspirational quote called ‘food for thought’ typical of Somizi’s motivational nature and spirit.
