Toyota SA and Media24 publicised on Tuesday evening that they have withdrawn from their relationship as the sponsors of the Afrikaans Is Groot concert. These statements came are after the same statement by MTN. Coca Cola kept a boundary between itself and the concert. Afriforum attacked MTN over the decision to exit from sponsoring the Afrikaans Is Groot campaign. Afriforum questioned MTN’s on the personal views of the artists that are involved in the show.
Afrikaans is Groot organisers publicised that it would be to turn to the concert’s supporters to ask them for financial help. The organisers started a campaign called #JouAIG, where the members of the public will be the primary sponsors of the show. The organisers acknowledged that there were no plans to remove Steve Hofmeyr from the concert’s lineup. The singer went to social media to ensure the public that he won’t exit the concert, even with the issues that have been caused in his name.
“We do what we have always done and needed most: we go independent. Our primary sponsors are our people. Their souls are untouchable,” read the post alongside a picture of people donating to the show. The artist later encouraged “pioneers” to rise up to this challenge.
