MPUMALANGA – A suspect appeared before the Louw`s Greek Magistrate Court on Thursday, 18 August 2022 after he was arrested at the N4 Nkomazi Plaza Tollgate near Kaapmuiden for possession of cloned bank cards.
It is alleged that on Wednesday, 17 August 2022, the suspect who was driving a truck was arrested during a stop and search operation conducted by the police, together with members of Absa and FNB Forensic investigators at the N4 Nkomazi Plaza. It further alleged that the suspect entered the tollgate booth at Nkomazi Plaza, presenting a stolen Standard bank fleet card to the cashier for payment at the tollgate. A transaction was made and the driver was stopped and searched, whereby one Standard bank fleet card, one counterfeit/cloned FNB card and one counterfeit/cloned Nedbank fleet card, together with the tollgate slips Tax invoices, were found in his possession.
Further intelligence driven investigation established that the stolen Standard bank card was used at various N4 tollgates between the periods 10 July 2020 and 17 August 2022. The above mentioned cloned card recorded transactions made estimated value over R 72 000-00.
A statement of the owner of the truck was obtained, confirming that cash was provided to the driver to make payments at the tollgates.
The suspect was arrested and charged with fraud, Contravention of Section 3(2) read with Section 3(3) and Section 8 of the Cyber Crime Act, Act 19 of 2020.
