The death of the late Uyinene Mrwetyana had the whole of South Africa in grief in 2019. Her family now can’t forget the death that their loved one suffered in the hands of a Post Office employee in the Western Cape. The family is now suing the South African Post Office. The family spokesperson told News24 that she doesn’t know what should happen so that South Africa changes.
Thembelani Mrwetyana, the family spokesperson, “I don’t know what it would take for our country to change, I really don’t know.” The mother of the late University of Cape Town student tries to cope with the situation by engaging into building up the foundation that was started in honour of Uyinene Mrwetyana. She is also attempting to help people that are victims of gender based violence. The family says the post office should have thoroughly looked into Luyanda Botha when they gave him a job, as he had issues with the law.
His issues with the law include an arrest in connection to carjacking in 1998, to which he got an eight-year prison sentence for. He got five years for the conviction and three years were suspended. According to police, the man supposedly had a sexual assault case against him which was then dropped. Legal representatives have begun legal proceedings against the South African Post office.
They are establishing if the organisation should be held responsible for the killing of the late Uyinene Mrweyana because the man was working for the Post Office and the late student was murdered on the institution’s area. The family hopes to set a point for other companies to do their research too. The late student’s passing away had many females in fear, demonstrations were also held all over South Africa.
