The event happened on Saturday morning at the Kruger National Park. The photographer was driving The along the S21 close to Skukuza when he saw restless baboons.
He says that because it was early in the morning it’s normal. However, he saw one baboon holding something that was of interest to the other baboons. “A young male baboon crossed the road and climbed up a marula tree. I waited for about 30 minutes before it came into view and was moving from tree to tree. The rest of the troop then moved away and the baboon was grooming and caring for the lion cub as if this was a young baboon,” says Kurt Schultz.
The safari guide says it’s common for a troop of baboons to kill young lions and leopards. However, this was the first time he saw a baboon grooming and taking care of a cub that is in the predator lineage. The man says at first he thought that the baboon was a female baboon, only to find out it was a young male. According to reports, the lion cub might not have made it out alive.
