A Big Brother Africa season 9 contestant and model by the name of Tayo Faniran had a live Instagram video recording showing South African police harassing him. The model said that the police stopped him and told him to get in the police van so that they can take him to the police station. The incident happened in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The model noted that the police van was not branded at the time. “Your car isn’t even branded,” says Tayo Faniran. He also says that they experience this type of xenophobia on a daily basis. “You wanna harass me like you did to all my brothers. You want us to go to the police station, I’ll drive in my car. I’m a law abiding resident of South Africa even though I’m not from here. You can’t treat me like that.”
“This is what we go through every day. This is what we go through. And when we talk about Xenophobia and everybody thinks we just blabbing. It is real,” says the model. The police called backup to help them arrest the man. The police then started forcefully pulling him and strangling him. Previously, the model also bashed AKAs statement of Nigeria and Bafana Bafana’s recent AFCON game.
AKA was reacting to the loss of Bafana Bafana in the game. AKA made statements about how South Africans always lose to Nigerians, he also stated that he would’ve preferred it if the squad lost against Egypt instead. Most people thought that he made statements that would spark xenophobia. The model said the hip hop artist should apologise to the Nigerians because football is a game that is meant to unite people instead of segregating them.
