The eThekwini metro police officials, in KwaZulu-Natal, have asked people living in the area near the Umhlanga Main Beach on Sunday to stay away from the water as the water was contaminated. This is after a humpback whale was seen close to the Umhlanga lighthouse at about 6:30am. The metro police spokesperson, Parbhoo Sewpersadh, stated that the whale might have been dead for about 3-4 days.
The whale was already decomposing. The spokesperson stated that they were planning on removing the whale on Monday, as they were disturbed by the weather conditions on Sunday. They planned to cut it up and remove it in skips. On Monday, a video surfaced, showing the municipal workers cutting the meat.
It also seemed that some of the residents were taking the meet for themselves. This had some social media users surprised. Most tweeps were worried about the health impacts of people eating the whale. One tweep was worried about people eating the decomposing meat. The tweep says, “This whale might be contaminated [and] these guys want to go [and] eat that seriously!!” One tweep says, “The next thing will be complaining about lack of service at our healthcare facilities when they get diarrhoea from this thing.” One tweep says, “Funny enough, its expensive meat served as a delicacy in some restaurants. Stuff like “balugar””.
