A 26-year-old church member is expected to appear at the Sasolburg Magistrate’s Court today for allegedly defrauding her church of over six-hundred thousand rand.
The Hawks’ Serious Commercial Crime Investigation unit arrested the suspect on the 30 August 2019, following investigation into allegations of theft and fraud that were levelled against her by a fellow congregant during June 2019.
The alleged theft was discovered when the complainant logged onto the church’s bank account and realized that money was apparently fraudulently transferred out of the church’s coffers into an unknown account. Further investigation revealed that the suspect apparently bought foreign currency investment valued at R698 000-00 from a national bank.
