Musician Moonchild Sanelly posted a video of herself twerking on social media. According to a caption to the video, the musician was encouraging women to be comfortable in their own bodies. “Let’s own our bodies and celebrate them by damn ourselves,” says Moonchild Sanelly. Some of her fans liked the video.
However, some tweeps didn’t like it because of the recent rape epidemic in South Africa. One tweep says, “Imagine participating on this hashtag to please South African men.” One tweep says, “Child be wise, there are perverts out there waiting to see you naked and justify their actions when they are done with you. #Respect your body…” One tweep says, “South Africaan men are so boring. They fail to protect us. They didn’t show up in numbers to the #SandtonShutdown but want us to do the #MoonChildChallenge. They have no sense of priorities.” One tweep jokingly says, “The #MoonChildChallenge is basically n***as complaining about the challenge…” One tweep says, “Ladies, let’s keep it that way…No video posting. We stan together.”
One tweep says women don’t owe anyone a twerk video. The tweep says, “Women don’t owe anyone to post vids of them twerking. I see some men shaming San women for not participating in this challenge…Moonchild shared with yall and that’s fine. Her prerogative…” One tweep says, “Imagine asking SA women to show off their bodies to a gender that are serial rapists. I mean it should be safe for them to do so anyways, but not in this country. Go argue with the rapist friends you’re protecting…”
